Danielle resolves to use the money to rescue Maurice, an elderly servant from the farm whom the Baroness had sold for debt money. Prince Henry discovers a band of gypsies in the nearby woods, ransacking the caravan of an old man. The man begs Henry to retrieve one particular item from the thieves. Henry returns with it after a long chase, and the old man reveals himself to be Leonardo da Vinci and the prized possession to be the Mona Lisa. Da Vinci had been summoned by Henrys parents, the king and queen, to appear at the French court. He and Henry form a friendship. While her step-family is out, and with the help of her best friend Gustav, Danielle dons a noblewomans dress and goes to court. She intercepts a wagon full of servants and criminals to be shipped to the Americas, including Maurice. Danielle demands his release, but the driver rudely refuses her. Prince Henry, who had been watching, asks Danielle to explain her position. Impressed with her intellect and strength of character, Henry is also captivated by her beauty and refusal to give him her name, although eventually she leaves him with the name of her mother. Here begins the game of cat and mouse, with the Baroness scheming to match Marguerite with the Prince and Henry in turn seeking the mysterious Comtesse Nicole de Lancret. He and Leonardo stumble upon Danielle at the river, and they meet again several times, as they argue about Utopia, class conventions, responsibility, and freedom, and she challenges him to use his position for a greater good. At one point, they stumble on the same gypsies Henry fought for the Mona Lisa, and after they are accosted she rescues him in an uproarious turn of events that brings them all together around the campfire that night. He begins to think of how he might accomplish something of his own, in light of what they have shared, and they kiss. He knows too that unless he chooses a wife before the upcoming masquerade ball, his parents will marry him off to a princess of Spain. When Danielles family receives their invitation to the ball, they lament their failing fortunes and dont know what to wear, until the Baroness proposes that Margeurite should wear Danielles mothers wedding dress and the matching glass slippers, which were stored away for Danielles wedding. When Danielle catches Marguerite trying on the dress she furiously protests, but the Baroness argues that Danielle, as a commoner, has no occasion to wear the dress anyway. Then Danielle explains that the dress and shoes belonged to her mother and Marguerite Makes a mean comment. This makes Danielle punch her and chase her down the stairs until Marguerite seizes Danielles copy of Utopia and threatens to throw it in the fire. Danielle gives in but Marguerite burns the book anyway and the Baroness has Danielle whipped. He also encourages her to go to the ball and tell Henry the whole truth, and that his love for her will be enough to overcome convention. Da Vinci declares he will give her wings, and the servants give her her mothers dress and slippers, which they have hidden. Just as the King and Queen are about to announce Henrys nostradamus 2012 history channel to the Spanish princess, Danielle enters the ball. Henry is overjoyed, but the Baroness rushes forward and tears off one of Danielles wings, accusing her of plotting to entrap the Prince and baring the truth of her being a commoner.
